Hello to you all, below is a list of volunteer opportunities for the month of October that were discussed at our last meeting. Now is the time to start getting involved, it looks great on applications to grad school and on resumes!
Get Active, Get Healthy LA! 2010 step out walk to fight Diabetes taking place on 11/13/10. It is a 5k walk around the Universal Studios Backlot followed by a festival including music, healthy snacks, info. about diabetes, & healthful living. Visit www.stepoutla.com for more info. There are many ways to get involved: - Start a team of walkers for the event - Host a booth in our festival area (Attached is our sponsorship package. Please contact me to build a mutually beneficial partnership.) - Become a volunteer at the event If you are interested in learning more about our event, you are welcome to join us for our Step Out Kick Off on 09/25/2010. Los Angeles Rock & Roll Marathon . The Rock n Roll Series consists of marathons and half marathons across the country where you can experience events that blend the excitement of rock ‘n’ roll music with world-class endurance events. It has grown tremendously over the years, and we now need more volunteer support than ever. We feel that all of the CSUN Student Organizations can be key contributors to this event. This can also be a great opportunity for you to promote your organization for free. So please support your community and 15,000 runners and walkers by volunteering at the Inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Los Angeles 1/2 Marathon! With over 1,500 positions available there is a spot for everyone, including teams, corporate groups, or just friends and family. The event partners with DetermiNation of the American Cancer Society, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team in Training, and the Grove of Hope. These are the Open Volunteer Positions: Health & Fitness Expo Location: LA Convention Center, Kentia Hall, 1201 South Figueroa St. Dates: October 21, 22, 23 Times: Various shifts available Potential Positions: Pre-Expo Setup (Thursday), Registration, T-Shirts, Goodie Bags, Souvenirs Start Line Location: Griffith Park (near LA Zoo) Date: Sunday, October 24Time: 5:00AM – 10:00AM (subject to change) Potential Positions: Runner Corrals, Gear Check, Refreshments, VIP Finish Line Location: Downtown LA (more details soon!) HACU is a program that provides federal and corporate internships to students of all majors. They are currently recruiting applicants for our Spring 2011 and Summer 2011 programs. Program benefits include a stipend of $450 to $550 per week, plus free airfare to and from the internship site, and housing arrangements. Students work in cities including Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Seattle, Denver, Miami, and Boston with organizations including the USDA, Department of Treasury, Deloitte, National Science Foundation, and more! On Tuesday, October 5th we will be hosting an information session at CSU Northridge, at 5 pm in University Hall Suite 105. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to attend this workshop. It would be wonderful if we could get a big group together to walk. It takes place on October 17th (Sunday). Donations support APLA and other LA area HIV/AIDS organizations. San Vicente Blvd. in West Hollywood) Length: 10 kilometers / 6.2 miles The AIDS Walk will start and end in West Hollywood Park, at the corner of Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Blvd. NAC Intern 2010-11 Nutrition/ Public Health interns needed for 7 months (November 2010-June 2011) to conduct nutrition education for elementary school health advocate students. Training provided. Job Description: NAC (Nutrition Advisory Council) consists of a group of 20 students at 4 school sites who advocate for better nutrition in their schools and act as role models for their peers. As an intern you have the opportunity to educate and influence these students on how to live a healthy life and how they can better help their friends and family live a healthier life as well. Interns are needed for approx. 2 hours a week, twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) from November 2010 until June 2011. __._,_.___

Pink for the Cure!
Here are some quick facts regarding breast cancer: *Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the U.S aside from skin cancer *October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) *It is a campaign to help increase awareness about the disease as well as to raise funds into its cause, prevention, and cure *Our Goal: To help promote breast cancer awareness on our very own CSUN campus Attend our next meeting 9-23-10 in JD 2524 to find out more information about this upcoming event! Just a friendly reminder that our next HESO Meeting will be next Thursday, September 23rd from 3-4 p.m. in room JD 2524. Be sure to come as we will be discussing our plans for our first event of the 2010 school year: Pink for the Cure. We would love to hear your input and ideas regarding this event! Make sure to come out to our first HESO meeting for Fall 2010! We will be meeting Thursday (9/9/10) in JD 3504 from 3pm-4pm. We will be discussing HESO and how to become a member. There will also be a speaker on behalf of Peer Health Exchange to present a volunteer opportunity to students. Hope to see you all there!
